Mechanism of action
Forms a viscous gel on contact with water and slows gastric emptying, intestinal transit and carbohydrate absorption if given first before meals. Thus it suppresses postprandial glycaemia but overall blood glucose lowering is marginal. It also has serum cholesterol lowering effect.
